Hello!
My name is Aaliyah Stottlemyer (they/them), also known as Sonder or Sonder Poetry on various social platforms. I'm a Mexican-American, Queer, Chicago-based, free-verse poet and self-published author. I'm also a graduate of Columbia College Chicago, receiving my Bachelor's degree in Creative Writing with a Poetry Concentration and a minor in Photography.
Some fun facts about me are that I love horror movies, antique shops, and obsessively playing the Sims4 until late hours of the night.
My Writing Journey
I began my writing journey in the summer of 2022 and haven't put it down since. I have always loved words and language. I have always been fascinated by the ones we use to describe and express things to others or the world around us. My primary language is English, but I have been taught a fair amount of Spanish through my mother and my tias. It’s interesting to see the differences between the two languages, to understand that there are different words to give meaning to different things.
But I often struggle to feel a connection to any of the words in the English vocabulary. I don’t feel that they are deep enough. True enough. And though sometimes saying it in Spanish alleviates that feeling of disconnect, I sometimes wonder if maybe it’s just that the word I am looking for doesn’t exist yet. Maybe there are no words that exist that can accurately depict anything. Not to describe how I feel, how I love, or even who I am. So I started writing poetry. Through it, I began to feel as though I was coming closer to understanding more of my feelings and thoughts and emotions. I am more of me than I ever was before I started writing. When I write I can be completely unapologetically honest. I can work through what I’m feeling line by line.
Every single one of my poems is a love letter or an acknowledgement to something I’ve been through or something I’ve felt at one point. They are all my thoughts, organized. They are every tug at a heart string. They are every passing emotion, written. But they are also an opportunity, for not only others, but more so myself to understand what I have been through and what I have felt.
It takes a lot of over-analyzing a situation or an emotion for me to be able to feel like I’ve truly understood it. I tend to ruminate on a lot of things if you couldn’t tell by now. I am usually uncertain if the word I use to describe a feeling is the right one or if there is a better, more in-depth way I can talk about it. Poetry fulfills that for me. Why use just one word when I can write paragraphs about it? To me, that just makes so much more sense.
Connection is also something that I believe writing can bring. And I can only hope that my own writing is a part of that. Everything that I write is typically quite specific. And I used to think that no matter what words I used, no one would be able to relate. No one would understand. I am all alone in how deeply I feel things. But that’s wrong. That is a cop-out for not writing at all. Because someone somewhere will get it. Someone somewhere does understand. So I write in hopes that I can have that sense of connection, even if it’s only a little bit.
If I can make just one person feel a little less alone in this unforgiving world, then I will do it. I will keep writing. Loneliness is unbearable. We were not made to feel isolated. We were not made to be sorely misunderstood. We need connection in some form. I need it. So I hope that I’ve offered you that at some point throughout any of my writing.
